Aladdin Postcards

The Aladdin Postcards is a set of cards design with the intention to not only provide those who want to attend the play with general information but to also be designed in a way that is abstract and visually eye catching to the recipients who receives the postcards. To accomplish this task I experimented with photographing paper as the source of the imagery and in order to emulate the setting of the story and feeling of wonder and magic that is Aladdin, I decided to curve and twist strips of paper and overlapped them to create different compositions and sense of depth. By choosing a stock of paper that contains subtle textures that were brought out with lighting and focusing on certain areas of the composition I was able to merge images with sharp and blurry edges to move away from the direct appearance of paper.

The graphic element in this project is the diamond. It plays off the featured quote on the card, "The diamond in the rough." The diamond/s are aligned and points to the content on the card, this helps guide the reader through the information and uses intervals to determine reading order based on the size of the graphic. It is a subtle aesthetic design that I find creates interest and focus that may not be obvious as to why it does.

The type choices for the cards is a pairing of Apple Chancery for the display font and Myriad Pro Condensed for the information. The high contrast pair of a script font and Sans Serif is visually pleasing and well read.

The colors chosen for the cards are yellow, purple, and cyan. All the colors are vibrant and pair well as they are triad colors on the color wheel with slight adjusting. They are inspired by elements from Aladdin such as yellow pertaining to desert, gold, and purple and blues are tied to royalty, beauty, and for me, magic.
